Airport Logistics Siemens receives order to improve capacity at Kunming Changshui International Airport
- Highly efficient VarioTray technology for optimized processing
- State-of-the-art early bag store for 3,000 bags
- Implementation with no interruption to airport operations
Siemens Logistics has received an order to supply baggage handling and sorting technology for the Terminal 1 extension at Kunming Changshui International Airport in China. The order includes delivery of a highly developed early bag store (EBS) and the latest generation of the VarioTray technology. The latter consists of a tray-based conveyor line, a LineStacker to stack unused trays, and 26 TilterPlus that can discharge bags to both sides. In addition, Siemens will work closely with the general contractor Kunming Logan-KSEC Airport Logistics System Company to deliver the complete project management, engineering, design and control system.
Michael Reichle, CEO of Siemens Logistics, said: “We are proud to support the airport in expanding its capacities and further enhancing passenger convenience. With our leading EBS and innovative tray technology, we will make a significant contribution to helping Kunming Airport cope with rising passenger numbers and increase its efficiency and competitiveness.”
Among others, Siemens will install its state-of-the-art VarioStore, a tray-based Lift & Run EBS system with capacity for 3,000 bags. The EBS optimizes the transport of transfer baggage and allows passengers to check in early, for example the evening before departure. Kunming Airport will be the third airport in China to benefit from the highly efficient Lift & Run EBS from Siemens.
Siemens will also implement a 2,700-meter-long tray-based conveyor line to transport the baggage fast and safely. During off-peak periods, a LineStacker stores the unused trays in a space-saving and energy-efficient manner. For optimal sorting results, the final line will be equipped with 26 TilterPlus that are capable of tilting to both sides so that a single tray can serve two destinations. The scope of supply also contains the implementation of high-performance IT, including system control via a programmable logic controller (PLC). This technology will facilitate intelligent process management throughout the entire baggage handling system. Siemens will carry out the work during ongoing operations, without any restrictions to the normal flight plan.
Kunming Changshui International Airport is the primary airport serving Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan Province. After Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, Kunming is the country’s fourth gateway hub airport, and the biggest in southwestern China. In 2018, the airport served over 47 million passengers.
