Siemens technology for New Zealand Post

  • Siemens successfully commissions flats sorting systems for New Zealand’s postal service
  • Intelligent software solutions for data transparency throughout the country
  • Open Mail Handling System improves efficiency and work ergonomics

Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL) has equipped New Zealand’s largest mail sorting centers with new Open Mail Handling Systems (OMS) for flats sorting. The OMS at New Zealand Post in Auckland and Christchurch can process up to 25,000 magazines, flats, small parcels, letters and postcards every hour. The wide range of mail types it can handle combined with its fast sequencing and sorting processes are what makes the Siemens technology especially impressive. Whereas open or plastic-wrapped magazines previously had to be separately routed to manual sorting, for example, the new system is able to handle these items automatically.

"We’re very satisfied with the cooperative way this project has been implemented. Siemens’ high-performance technology enables us to process a very large range of mail types and formats processed in New Zealand, significantly enhancing our efficiency," explains Vanessa Ellis, General Manager Network Transformation of New Zealand Post "The systems are connected to statistics software that allows us to monitor system capacity utilization, providing a constant overview that lets us respond rapidly to changes."

"We're delighted to have had the opportunity to deliver our OMS to New Zealand Post, a system proven worldwide that meets our customer’s high requirements in terms of efficiency, flexibility, ergonomics and customized solutions. The OMS is capable of processing a broader range of mail types and formats than any other sorting system on the market," says Michael Reichle, CEO of Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics.

SPPAL has implemented a comprehensive network management software package throughout the country that enables New Zealand Post to act flexibly and demand-oriented, even with volatile mail volumes. This allows all mail sorting to be controlled across all sorting locations. New Zealand Post's previously existing sorting machines will also be integrated into the overall system.

New Zealand Post is a state-owned enterprise that, nationwide, processes almost 650 million mail items per year. Alongside mail and parcel services, the company also offers various transport and logistics services.
