Siemens to equip new cargo terminal in Dubai

Emirates SkyCargo expands its cargo capacity with a new cargo terminal for its freighter operations at Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport. In this context, Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions equips the new cargo terminal with a modern material handling system. Once the first phase of the new terminal is complete, it will achieve a throughput of 700,000 tons of freight per year. During phase two, which is expected to commence in 2015, the throughput will increase by another 300,000 tons per year. Commencement of start-up operations is scheduled for May 2014.

The new terminal’s total building ground area is 68,000 square metres. Air-cargo containers and pallets can be stored in more than 5,000 storage locations. Siemens supplies and installs the storage and material handling technology as well as the automation systems and electrical equipment. A warehouse management and order picking computer from Siemens controls the highly automated system, ensuring the highest possible freight throughput and the shortest possible waiting times for airplanes and trucks. Siemens also equipped SkyCargo’s „Cargo Mega Terminal” at Dubai International Airport which has been in operation since 2008.

Siemens has already installed one of the world’s largest baggage handling systems at Dubai International Airport with an overall conveyor length of 90 kilometers, handling some 15,000 bags per hour. Siemens has also developed the completely new early bag store (EBS) known under Lift & Run Baggage Warehouse. The solution is faster, more economical and environmentally friendlier than other systems. With the new construction project, Dubai managed to increase the airport’s capacity for 70 million passengers and is prepared for the expected growth in the years to come.

Emirates SkyCargo is the freight division of Emirates Airline, which currently serves more than 130 destinations in 76 countries all over the world. Emirates SkyCargo’s „Cargo Mega Terminal” at Dubai International Airport is one of the world’s most modern and efficient freight terminals.
