Airport logistics Siemens to install a fast and efficient air cargo center at London Heathrow Airport

  • IAG Cargo to benefit from optimal use of the available space with an intelligent layout and
    innovative conveyor technology

Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL) has been commissioned to install a highly efficient air cargo material handling system at the international London Heathrow Airport. International Airlines Group (IAG), one of the world’s largest airline companies, issued the contract for its subsidiary IAG Cargo. Siemens is equipping a new cargo building, allowing the cargo operator to benefit from a substantial expansion of their existing air cargo capacity and optimization of complex cargo processes. To this end, Siemens will implement an intelligent system layout and innovative material handling system.

Siemens will install a system consisting of elevating transfer vehicles, transfer vehicles, truck docks for loading and unloading, and conveyor lines for the rapid break and build of cargo. Siemens will also deliver special cold storage zones for IAG Cargo’s temperature controlled products.

IAG Cargo is the single business created following the merger of British Airways World Cargo and Iberia Cargo in April 2011. Following the integration of additional airlines into the business, including Aer Lingus, bmi and Vueling, IAG Cargo now covers a network of over 350 destinations.

Siemens’ customers include five of the top ten air cargo airports worldwide, which altogether handle around 14 million tons of goods yearly. In addition, the company underscores its success with long-term operation and maintenance contracts with almost 40 airports worldwide.
